Before and After — More Cowbell

The Before and After series focuses on the two or three key creative choices, in terms of composition and processing, that go into creating an image.  Specific technical details about the shot have been left out — you won’t hear me talking about tone curve adjustments and whatnot unless it was a key component of the end result.

More Cowbell performs on stage at Lucky Lounge in Austin (the guitarist in back is actually from another band).

Exposure

  • Shutter:  1/250
  • Aperture:  f/1.4
  • ISO: 3200
  • Camera:  Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III
  • Lens:  Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM

Composition and Processing

  • I had three concerns for this shot:  first, getting both guys in focus at f/1.4 (the guitarist in back is actually a little soft, but at this size it’s not too noticeable);  second, catching them at the peak of their movement where they would slow down enough for 1/250;  and third, finding an angle where the guy in back wasn’t obscured by an arm or guitar neck.
